Landscaping Plants – The Choices

Always choose native plants to include in your landscape if possible. This will make the landscape easier to maintain while allowing it to be different than other people’s landscapes. Plants that are naturally comfortable in your region will certainly require less attention than those that are not. Native plants will also need less attention.

Some easy to grow favorites for full sun are Daylilies, Peonies, Lavender, Roses, and Russian Sage which is especially good for hot, dry areas. Full sun means they will receive at least 6 hours of direct afternoon sun, preferably more.

Consult a professional before starting any type of landscape work in your yard. While you probably don’t need them to work on the whole project, spending a little money for a short consultation could help you avoid making expensive mistakes down the line. This is especially important if you are not experienced in landscape design.

Take the time to regularly trim and shape your shrubs and bushes to give your yard looks well cared for look. Many plants grow excessively and need regular maintenance.Don’t hesitate to cut them all the way back, as they can grow back quickly.

Gardening clubs may meet weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. It really depends upon the interest and size of the group attending. Some clubs are free and others have a small fee to join, as members dues may be used to pay for refreshments and other perks. Sometimes gardening clubs run plant sales where the profits go to the clubs, thus eliminating the small fees that would normally be required. Benefits of the gardening club might include reduced price admissions to local arboretums, conservatories and botanical gardens. Additionally they might include discounts to local gardening courses.
